Erratic England Hold on to SL Trophy

Despite a dreadfully disappointing winter in the Subcontinent, a beleaguered England team finally performed in Colombo, clinching a 1-1 series draw against the Sri Lankans.  The result, which secures England’s retention of the series trophy, is crucial to their hopes of winning back the Champions’ Mace when they face South Africa in the summer.

Fine performances by Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Swann set up the victory as the English atoned for a fourth consecutive Test match loss in Galle.  They will now know that wins in their forthcoming home series against West Indies and the frontrunning South Africans will see them rise once again to the top of the table.

Sri Lanka will be disappointed not to have seized this chance to wrest back the series trophy after victory in the first match of the two-match series.  A brilliant display by captain Mahela Jawardene was not enough to force a series win, with his team combining moments of excellence with misfiring inconsistency.

The sides are not now scheduled to meet again until May 2014, when Sri Lanka will have to contend with the unfavourable conditions occasioned by the English spring.
