South Africa Stay Top with Series Win

Flying to New Zealand knowing that anything but a series win would allow Australia to displace them as Champions, South Africa did all that was required by recording a 1-0 victory.  The narrow scoreline does not fully reflect the Proteas superiority, though credit must go to the home side for battling draws in the 1st and 3rd Tests.

After a first match in which both sides enjoyed periods of dominance, victory by 9 wickets in the 2nd Test sealed South Africa’s retention of the series trophy.  Only Kane Williamson’s gutsy last-day century in the final Test prevented a repeat of the 2-0 result seen last time these sides met in 2007-08.

New Zealand will be heartened once again by some promising signs from their team, and should feel no disgrace in losing by just one Test to this fine South African outfit.  The Black Caps remain 7th in the table.

The Proteas must now prepare for the English summer in what could be a mouthwatering top-of-the-table decider.
