New Champions South Africa Face New Zealand Challenge

In their first Test series since regaining the Champions’ Mace, South Africa take on New Zealand with the hope of maintaining their position at the top of the table.  The three-match series, which starts on 7 March in Dunedin, will prove a testing assignment for the Proteas, away from home, against an improving New Zealand side.

As current series holders, South Africa will be aiming to defend their trophy, but so closely fought is the battle for the no 1 spot, that only an outright win will be sufficient to hold off the challenge of second-placed Australia.

New Zealand will be hoping to build on their encouraging performance in the Trans-Tasman Trophy back in December, in which they held Australia to a 1-1 draw.  A confident-boosting, though routine victory against Zimbabwe followed, and they will be looking to carry on their good form into this series.

The top-ranked South Africans, however, remain firm favourites with conditions expected to aid their fearsome battery of pace bowlers.  Their 3-0 clean sweep of the prefatory 50-over series only adds to the likelihood of an eventual South African victory.
